ClimateSense is proud to announce Shift, a solo exhibition by artist Rilla Marshall, on show from March 25th – June 15th, 2023 in the gallery at The Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation.
Shift is a series of hand-woven artworks which explores the continual process of erosion, from its shifting sediment and shifting shorelines, to our shifting approaches towards shoreline protection and erosion mitigation. The artworks in this exhibition pull visual cues from the data that monitors these changes. Based on an archive of drone footage and data recorded by the UPEI Climate Lab ranging from 2018 – 2022, Shift highlights alterations to shorelines in the wake of changing climate patterns by interpreting coastal geographies through the woven grid. During the weaving process, Marshall uses weft inlay to “color in” areas with pattern to emphasize coastal areas of absence where erosion has occurred, while her use of color and texture captures the transition, overlap, repetition and movement existing in the liminal spaces where the sea meets the shore.
Rilla Marshall graduated from NSCAD University in 2004 with a BFA in Textiles. Marshall’s woven artwork has been exhibited in group and solo shows in PEI, NS, Alberta, Ontario, and Newfoundland and Labrador. She works in her home studio in a century-old school house in Belfast, Epetwitk/ PEI Canada.
